Nighttime Skincare Routine

Instead of putting makeup ON my face in this week's video, I'm taking it OFF! Skincare is by far the most important step in any beauty routine. When your skin is in good condition, makeup application is so much easier and the results are far better. It often takes years of trial and error before you find the products that truly suit your skin to make it balanced and healthy. Everyone has different skin types and concerns, so it is important to tailor your skincare routine to suit your personal needs. What works for your friend, mom, or sister may not work for you. Be mindful of ingredients and observant of how your skin reacts to certain products.

This year, I have finally put together a consistent skincare routine that has been working well for my combination skin that can be a little sensitive and breakout-prone. I must credit Paula Begoun and her "Beautypedia" for helping me learn more about product ingredients and how products actually work on the skin from a scientific perspective. If you are interested in learning more about the products you currently use and their ingredients, look them up on the Beautypedia. Warning: I have lost hours of my life geeking-out on that site!

Some helpful skincare tips I've learned through the years:

1. Opt for the most basic non-drying gentle cleanser to wash the face. It's only on your face for a few minutes before you rinse it away, so fancy ingredients don't even have time to do their job. You want the cleanser to remove makeup and debris from the skin but you don't want to over-strip it of its natural oils.

2. Avoid products with heavy fragrances, as they can often be the most irritating ingredients! Opt for "fragrance-free" when possible.

3. Manual exfoliants (such as grainy textured products labeled as "scrubs") can actually be more damaging than beneficial to the skin due to their rough texture that can cause micro tears on the surface of the skin (I'm looking at you, St. Ives Apricot Scrub). Try products containing chemical exfoliants such as Alpha Hydroxy Acid (Glycolic or Lactic Acids) or Beta Hydroxy Acid (Salicylic) which penetrate deeper into the skin than manual exfoliants, to gently digest the dead skin cells.

4. Don't pick at your breakouts! This tip is easier said than done, but try to restrain yourself and hide that magnifying mirror. Squeezing a pimple can be very satisfying, but it can bring about more trouble than it's worth. Broken capillaries, scarring, and spreading acne-causing bacteria are just a few problems that can be avoided by leaving that zit alone.
